NHL "COOL SHOTS" FEATURES CELEBRITY BACKYARD
"SHINNY" IN CHARITY EVENT
LaFontaine's team raises money for CiC
Foundation
LONG ISLAND, NY, February 23, 2004 - The NHL
"Cool Shots" program will debut a segment today
that features celebrities and former NHL players
competing in games of "shinny" on their backyard
rinks. Among those participating in today's
program are Denis Leary, Michael J. Fox, Pat
LaFontaine and Cam Neely.
The segment was taped during the weekend of
January 24th and 25th at Denis Leary's backyard
rink in Connecticut and at Pat LaFontaine's rink
on Long Island. The games of "shinny" brought
all involved to their earliest roots of playing
the game on open ponds or streams. Leary's
"Roxbury Rippers" were joined by Fox and Neely,
while LaFontaine's "Huntington Low Tides" were
joined by Dan Moriarty of "Cool Shots".
All games were played in the name of charity -
with The Rippers representing Leary's
Firefighters Foundation (www.learyfirefighters.org),
and the Low Tides representing LaFontaine's
Companions in Courage Foundation
(www.CiC16.org). Each celebrity anted up a sum
of money that was divvied up among both teams.
In addition, the teams faced off for the
Williams Lake Memorial Cup - a trophy donated by
LaFontaine's father in honor of the place where
Pat first learned the game.
Each rink featured its own set of "local" rules
and intricacies. At Leary's "old-time hockey"
rink, the losers of each game had to shovel the
rink. At LaFontaine's "new school" facility the
winners fought for the chance to drive the mini-Zamboni.
Leary had an old time hockey shed with a
wood-burning stove, while LaFontaine featured a
full locker room complete with sauna, steam room
and stone fireplace.
The atmosphere at both rinks was perfect for the
day and it led to spirited play by both teams.
The series came down to a shoot-out, with the
outcome being broadcast today.
NHL "COOL SHOTS," the League's weekly lifestyle
and entertainment magazine show, spotlights the
lives of NHL players, coaches and personalities
both on and off the ice. The show also
incorporates hockey news and a segment called
"COOL CUTS" in which NHL game highlights are
accompanied by the hottest new music.
