(Manhasset, NY – May 1, 2007) The Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC) Annual Awards Dinner was held Monday, April 30, 2007. The dinner honored elite athletes and coaches with roots in Nassau County.
NHL Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine was inducted into the Class of '07 along with former teammate Mike Bossy and former boxing champion Rocky Graziano. Bill Ryan of the Boston Globe was presented with the commission’s Dick Schaap Award for outstanding sports journalism.
Other notable award recipients included D'Brickashaw Ferguson of the New York Jets, WNBA superstar Sue Bird, Boston College Head Basketball Coach Al Skinner, and Selena Roberts of the New York Times.
LaFontaine acknowledged the many teammates that helped him throughout his career and set the example that led him to start the Companions in Courage Foundation. He noted the charity work that Bob Nystrom continues to do in the Long Island community and credited the Stanley Cup champion as an inspiration.
An emotional highlight of the awards dinner was the inaugural presentation of the James J. Regan Award in memory of the Army Sergeant from Chaminade High School who was killed in Iraq in February. The native of Manhasset was a tremendous lacrosse player in high school and college and was a 1998 NCSC Outstanding High School Award recipient. The award exemplifies Regan's love for sport, academic excellence and commitment to his community.
