The HackensackUMC Foundation was proud to officially open the “Lion’s Den” at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital on Monday, June 22, 2015. This interactive playroom was made possible by a donation from the Sohn Conference Foundation. Through the use of innovative communications tools, these playrooms allow patients to be connected with family, friends and even celebrities during their hospital stay. This is the 18th Lion’s Den room built by the Companions in Courage Foundation in children’s hospitals across North America, and the second collaboration between Sohn and CiC. Evan Sohn, vice president of the foundation bearing his family name, noted that his brother, Ira, had been treated at Hackensack before he passed away. and he called 18 a “very symbolic number. It’s the Hebrew symbol for life,” he said. “Chai, like l’chaim. It’s the symbol of life.” Pat LaFontaine spoke directly to patients who gathered in the new room. “This was a labor of love, but now it’s a beacon of hope,” LaFontaine said. “It’s a beacon of love. It’s a place where kids can come and be kids and smile and hopefully ease their pain.” Additional speakers at the event included: Jeffrey R. Boscamp, M.D., HackensackUMC vice president and chief academic officer and chairman and physician-in-chief; Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at HackensackUMC; and Jon M. Fitzgerald, executive vice president and chief development officer of the HackensackUMC Foundation.
