The second Lion’s Den based in a Canadian hospital was opened at Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary on October 20, 2011. The room was built in conjunction with the 2011 NHL Heritage Classic. The first Lion’s Den based in a Canadian hospital opened in 2009 at CHU Sainte Justine in Montreal.

The Heritage Classic featured an outdoor hockey game between the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens. To commemorate this unique event, the NHL Foundation wanted to create a legacy gift to the children of Alberta. The CiC Foundation created a Lion’s Den Room that features 3 XBox console stations, 3 computer stations, a SMART Table and Board. The worldwide headquarters of SMART Technologies is based in Calgary.
